we worked at one of our Discover USC programs. We host these programs for prospective pupils across the world to ensure students and families gain helpful information about USC and our application process. We realize it’s just not feasible, so we try our best to bring a bit of USC to you although we would love for everyone to visit USC!
During Discover programs we hope presenting ourselves as expert and organized. That generally means we appear extra-early, run around like crazy people ensuring the brochures we sent in advance have arrived, curse at non-functioning technology, and have the resort manager’s number on speed dial. Luckily we were ready to go before the first family arrived (there is always one that arrives at least a half hour early! for me, this time in D.C., there was no digging through offices and mail rooms to find our boxes of materials, our Power Point miraculously worked, and) We recognize that families spend a lot of time information that is attending, touring campuses, and filling out applications, so we want to verify we are providing the best information in the most efficient way at all our occasions. We usually also provide some wonderful USC alums provide hand when they are available. I always question my entire life alternatives when I listen to just what our alums are up to. Law school at Georgetown…working for the CIA….no big deal.
I was scheduled to talk briefly at this system. A big element of my job is public speaking; I give presentations to kids in auditoriums, classrooms, and career centers all the time. So I am generally very comfortable talking to a group. That stuff doesn’t faze me anymore. Nonetheless, put me in a hotel ball room aided by the Dean of Admission (my boss’s boss’s employer) and have me to speak, and I’ll feel a bit nervous ( merely a tad!)
It was great to see several familiar faces of students I had met at high schools that week. I talked with one family who’d driven about four hours to go to! That you have to make that sacrifice while we loved that the family was there, please don’t feel. Near you, please feel free to just let your admission counselor know that you want more information but can’t attend a Discover program if we aren’t coming to a city.
When our presentation that is formal is there is a chance to inquire and hear from admission counselors from academic departments. Pupils can split into groups according to specialized niche and ask major questions that are related well. I heard from many families who had been having their first experience with USC that evening. A few other moms and dads provided with me personally that they had currently been to USC, but they learned something new which somehow changed their perspective in the college application process or about USC. I additionally talked with a parent who appeared to have some outdated information regarding USC or had accumulated some information based on another person’s experience. This is a great opportunity for parents to recharge their knowledge and learn about present time USC.
One of many final, and something of my favorite, comments I heard of the evening was ‘now I understand why every person has plenty school spirit!’ A job well done on our part.
At Discover USC! Maybe you will learn something new…you never know if we are coming to a city near you, or if you will be in Los Angeles on November 22nd, please come visit us!
Mythbuster: i could take the SAT or ACT right before the admission deadline
The Myth: I can take the SAT or ACT prior to the admission deadline plus it shall be fine.
The Verdict: Not an idea that is great. The test might not allow it to be into the application with time for review.
With our December 1 deadline approaching, its almost that time of year when our office is sent thousands and thousands of applications, transcripts, test scores and letters of recommendation. Honestly, it is amazing that every thing gets placed into each and every student’s application file given the high amount of content we receive.
It’s essential to realize that it takes a significant period of time for all application materials to be organized and downloaded in to a student’s application file- especially test scores. Think about this. SAT and ACT offer certain test times and times. They then need certainly to score those tests, send you your rating, and send the score then to any or all the colleges on your list. This takes a ton of time on their end, also it takes weeks that are several our end to download and process the ratings.
Invest the a standardized test right before the admission deadline, it can take up to two weeks as soon as the test is scored to be downloaded into your application file. That might be far too late. Our staff has from 1 until early January to review ALL the applications submitted by our December 1 merit scholarship deadline december. We shall accept scores that are submitted after the deadline, but keep in mind we need official test scores before we could review a pupil’s application.
You will would also like to ensure that you request all of your other application materials to be sent on time. Your school is quite busy at the moment of year while they send transcripts to hundreds of colleges. On top of grading tests and papers, your teachers are writing letters of recommendation for you personally on their own time. You shall wish to provide everyone else advance notice of admission deadlines when they have to submit materials on your behalf. Your instructors and counselors will appreciate it really! If you give them sufficient time, they’ll be able to get us your transcript on time and compose thoughtful recommendations.
You will manage to always check on your application materials during your portal. Keep in mind you submit won’t show up on your portal instantly that we are processing hundreds of thousands of documents, so any application shmoop.pro pieces. Please wait a few business days before contacting us if it looks like something is missing.
Application processing is really a task that is huge a lot of moving parts. The ship will sail efficiently if students be mindful of their application materials ahead of time, and at the same time things can get rocky and fall through the cracks if documents and materials are sent late. We thank you in advance for being courteous and submitting all of the application materials on time!
