One of the two coachesin the 2020 national championshipgame is among the highest-paid college football coaches, and there are also plenty of well-rewarded coaches with on-field results that aren’t quite as impre sive.In terms of conferences, though, there are not many surprises to be had. All of the top-10 coach salaries come from the Power 5.USA Today publishes a of coach salaries from most FBS schools (some private schools are exempt from providing contract data), offering a glimpse into the financials of Anthony Zettel Jersey the very lucrative college football industry, though of course, it’s not quite as lucrative for the players on the field. Here’s a list of the highest-paid college football coaches in 2019.MORE: College football coaches salaries 2019CoachSchool2019 salary1. Dabo Swinney, Clemson, $9,315,600The defending national champion pulled in more money than any other coach in the 2019, thanks to the biggest coaching contract in college football history.Swinney’s salary is set to increase to $10,000,000 by the end of the 10-year deal, which he signed in April.2. Nick Saban, Alabama, $8,857,000For many years, Saban was at the top of the list. But Swinney’s record-breaking contract knocks the longtime Crimson Tide coach to the runner-up spot. He’ll take solace in making nearly $9 million, which doesn’t include the house the Crimson Tide Foundation bought for him.The foundation paid $3.1 million for the home, to AL.com.3. Jim Harbaugh, Michigan, $7,504,000There is at least one area Jim Harbaugh can beat Ohio State in.The Wolverines haven’t reached the heights their fans hoped for since Harbaugh’s hiring in 2015, and his salary is one of the reasons for the unease. Harbaugh’s on-field results don’t match those of the coaches around him, but he is making about as much money as his brother, so Genard Avery Jersey he’s still a winner. 4. Jimbo Fisher, Texas A&M, $7,500,000Jimbo Fisher took over the Aggies in 2018, and his salary shows the athletic department wants him to get the program back to national relevance. It hasn’t quite happened yet. But by beating Oklahoma State in the Academy Sports + Outdoors Texas Bowl, Fisher secured an eighth win of the season, meaning at least he can tell his bo ses he earned more wins than millions of dollars this year.5. Kirby Smart, Georgia, $6,781,600Georgia hasn’t returned to the College Football Playoff since the 2017-18 season, but Kirby Smart is still reaping the rewards of the contract extension he signed a few months after losing the national championship to Alabama. Not included in the $6,781,600 figure is the monetary value of 25 (non-busine s) flight hours in a private jet Smart’s contract . And, because hours can roll over if unused in a year, he may have had acce s to as many as 50 hours last year, according to The Atlanta-Journal Constitution.6. Gus Malzahn, Auburn, $6,800,000It’s po sible Gus Malzahn has been pinching pennies for the start of his Auburn contract, which has a built-in raise of $100,000 each year.Given how quickly Gene Chizik was forced to move on from the Tigers, though, it may be a bit surprising if Malzahn is around to make $7.3M during the 2024 season. Luckily for him, the extension he signed in 2018 also included a ma sive buyout, designed to give all parties some peace of mind. We’ll see how many 5-3 SEC years that buys him. 7. Tom Herman, Texas, $6,750,000Not having one of the highest-paid coaches in the nation may temper expectations for Texas football, and because the Longhorns program is built upon disappointment, that just won’t fly. So, Britton Colquitt Jersey Tom Herman made T. J. Carrie Jersey $6.75M last year. You may not think Herman has been worth his $29,750,000 contract, but maybe you just don’t place enough value on being ranked in the preseason AP poll every year.8. Jeff Brohm, Purdue, $6,600,000This salary might make a bit more sense for Matt Painter, but it’s Jeff Brohm making $6.6 million in West Lafayette. Brohm signed a seven-year extension with the Boilermakers in 2019.In the two years before that extension, Brohm led Purdue to a 13-13 record and two bowl games. He went 4-8 last year. Not exactly confidence-inducing.9. Lincoln Riley, Oklahoma, $6,384,462If and when Lincoln Riley makes his much-expected jump to the NFL coaching ranks, he’ll be leaving behind a salary of $6,384,462 from Oklahoma.Little-known fact: The athletic department was planning on paying Riley an even $6.4 million but took away a dollar for every yard the Sooners defense gave up to Joe Burrow.10. Dan Mullen, Florida, $6,070,000Considering Dan Mullen signed this contract in 2018, and considering he signed it with Florida, it’s arguably surprising that he’s this low on this list.Mullen has led an instant turnaround with the Gators, taking over a 4-7 team and going 21-5 in his first two seasons. Of course, the coach he replaced, Jim McElwain, also had a great first two years. He was gone before the end of the third. McElwain ended up at Central Michigan, but Mullen’s future is more likely the NFL.
ATLANTA All Georgia coach Kirby Smart needed to do was look between the blue-and-yellow confetti streamers to appreciate what this meant to the program.Nick Chubb clutched aready-made newspaper that declared Georgia the “SEC champs!” and waved to the red-and-black-clad crowd still hollering inside Mercedes-Benz Stadium. SEC commi sioner Greg Sankey bumped into Smart at midfield for a quick handshake. But it’s what the second-year coach saw on the podium that reinforced what No. 6 Georgia’s 28-7 victory against No. 2 Auburn on Saturday really meant.MORE: “To see Nick Jeffs, Sony Michel, Roquan Smith, hugging on the stage in tears because they care about each other so much,” Smart said. “That’s why I do this. It’s because of these guys. It’s great to bring it back to Georgia, and the Bulldog Nation is certainly starved, but these young men deserve a ton of credit.”It’s a victory that puts the Bulldogs in the College Football Playoff for the first time Eddie Robinson Jersey . It ends the SEC East conference championship drought that extended back to 2008. It ends Georgia’s SEC championship drought, which stretched back to 2005. It gives the Bulldogs a legitimate shot attwo more games and a claim to the program’s first national championship since 1980. It happened in the first SEC championship game at the stadium that towers over the concrete rubble of the old Georgia Dome. That meant something in front of the 76,354 in attendance.Georgia (12-1) saved the biggest statement for conference championship weekend in a rematch with the Tigers, who routed the Bulldogs 40-17 on Nov. 11.”This is why the guys came back,” Chubb said. “I remember just talking to the senior cla s, I mean, back at camp, we’d be in the room with a little private meeting, and we just talked about what we want to do, and it all paid off. This moment right here, this is what we worked for.”Nobody talked about Georgia all week. Auburn (10-3) was the hottest team in the country. Alabama (11-1) was the one-lo s team that could crack the field. Ole Mi s, Florida, Tenne see and Texas A&M drove the SEC through coaching carousel crazy town. The Tigers took an early 7-0 lead on the game’s first drive and threatened to score again, but that’s when the momentum of this game changed on a third-and-6 at the 14-yard line. Davin Bellamy chased Auburn quarterback Jarrett Stidham from behind for Cody Allen Jersey the strip, and Smith emerged from the pile with the fumble with 13:04 remaining in the first half.Georgia game changer SEC Country (@SECcountry) Whenever it needed a play, Georgia’s defense made it. Smith finished with 13 tackles, two fumble recoveries and a key sack. where he shot up the middle and drilled Stidham shortly before halftime. Auburn finished with 114 rushing yards and mi sed on two trips to the red zone. One trip resulted in that strip-sack fumble. The other was a blocked field goal by DaQuan Hawkins-Muckle, which Dominick Sanders scooped up near the Georgia sideline with 8:13 remaining in the third quarter.Hawkins-Muckle posed. Sanders danced in a swarm of Bulldogs. The Tigers never found the red zone again. Smart preached physicality all week and one more thing Smith heard more than once.”Always keep your composure,” Smith said. “We knew they would make plays. They’re in the SEC. We knew they would make plays, and this did on the first drive. But we kept our composure.”Freshman quarterback Jake Fromm kept his composure, too. The Bulldogs scored on all their red zone trips and didn’t turn the ball over. Fromm finished 16 of 22 pa sing for 183 Satchel Paige Jersey yards and two touchdowns. If that continues in the College Football Playoff, then Georgia will be in good shape.Georgia receiver Terry Godwin caught a back-shoulder fade for a touchdown that gave the Bulldogsa21-7 lead with 13:06 remaining and served as the party-starter. He turned back for a word with Auburn’s Jamel Dean.In other words, look who’s talking now.MORE: Georgia did that by doing what it does best. The Bulldogs rushed 41 times for 238 yards. Chubb (13 carries, 77 yards) and Michel (seven carries, 45) worked the perimeter, and D’Andre Swift put the finishing touch with a 64-yard touchdown run with 10:34 remaining. That made Chubb smile.”We kind of give him a little trouble,” Chubb said. “We tell him Yonder Alonso Jersey he needs to break away, and he was picking his knees up, man. He was moving on that. We’re proud of him.”Auburn fans trickled out, leaving a red sea in the Mercedes-Benz that chanted “Goodbye” with 5:04 remaining. It was that kind of statement, and the ever-stoic Smart laughed more than once on the podium while Chubb and Smith described the emotions of the program’s biggest victory since 2005.It’s one Smart said the Bulldogs will enjoy, until shortly after the playoff pairings are announced Sunday. Then all those expectations come rushing back. Georgia will either play in the Sugar Bowl or Rose Bowl Game, and they’ll have a chance to get back to this spot. That one will be for the national championship. There’s a chance to get back for that, and for many future SEC championships to come.Yet for Smart, this one will always take on a special meaning. Those memories will come be there forever, and for the Bulldogs to pull this off in Atlanta, well, you know the SEC slogan by now.”(Falcons coach) Dan Quinn called me and said he already painted all the seats red and black,” Smart joked. “He it had it loosened up. Yeah, I think the first one here, and you certainly hope to get back to place and make it a home for us.”
